LEADERSHIP HUMPHREYS COUNTY
What is it?
Leadership Humphreys County is a program to develop a diverse network of leaders throughout the county with a broad understanding of the area’s community needs and issues.
How does it work?
A group of fifteen-twenty community leaders with diverse backgrounds and experiences participate in a program of events and activities that will broaden their perspectives and decision-making skills to better address community needs and resources.
Members may be nominated by individuals, organizations or businesses or may apply themselves.
The program consists of eight monthly day-long programs and possible one-or-two day retreats as well as a graduation ceremony.
What happens at the end?
At the end of the one-year term, the participant joins an alumni association. This provides educational and social opportunities for the participants. Alumni also assist in planning future programs and identifying potential participants. In addition, a directory of all participants is published which identifies each person’s community interests.
How can an individual participate?
Candidates for Leadership Humphreys County must submit an application to the Leadership Humphreys County selection committee.
Criteria for selection include: Commitment to serve Humphreys County
Policy shaping responsibility in employment or volunteer organizations.
Ability to make time commitment required by program.
What will it cost?
Participation will cost $200. The participant or his sponsor is expected to cover the cost. Some partial scholarships will be made available. Payment must be made upon acceptance into the program. The registration fee will cover expenses for the orientation and retreat, meals for the monthly session, and materials for the program.
What are the benefits?
Through Leadership Humphreys County, the sponsoring organization will develop leaders with more awareness and sensitivity to issues facing his or her organization and community. Participants will establish a network that cuts across social, economic, professional and jurisdictional lines. Finally, the community will have a cadre of people with a greater understanding and appreciation of community issues and how these issues need to be addressed.

HUMPHREYS COUNTY HISTORY
Humphreys County was formed out of Stewart County by an act of the General Assembly passed October 9, 1809. The new county was to be south of Stewart and adjoining the counties of Dickson and Hickman on the west. The first court and all subsequent courts of Humphreys County to be held in the house of Samuel Parker, Jr. until otherwise ordered or provided by law. Later in 1809, a subsequent act was passed on November 22 providing that part of Dickson County be included in Humphreys County.
In 1812, Reynoldsburg was selected as the county seat. At that time, it was a forest. Fifty acres of ground was donated by Mr. Brevard to build the public buildings and locate the town. Mr. Brevard also paid for the survey of the same land. The town was platted in 1816 and was named for Honorable J. B. Reynolds, a Tennessee member of Congress.
In 1836 the General Assembly passed another act to divide the county and the Tennessee River was the dividing line between Humphreys County and Benton County. At that time, it was decided to move the county seat. Waverly was selected as the new county seat. The land was owned by David Childers and was surveyed and laid out by Isaac Little in 1837. In 1838, the town of Waverly was incorporated.
